Two weeks ago Sven and I spent most of our Saturday building this headboard. We just followed the tutorial with only one modification - I didn't buy the 2 inch foam squares but instead bought 2 full size foam bed toppers each for $10. I saved about $40 going that route. Here is the final product...
The fabric is an upholstery fabric from Calico Corners. Since it was so thick the hardest part was making the buttons. I highly recommend the above tutorial if you're considering making a tufted headboard.

You guys did a terrific job! Now I know who to ask if I want a tufted headboard, it ought to be faster since you already know what to do.
